The War of Sin

Sin.  It’s a word not often used today, even among those who claim the Bible as their basis of living.

Paul reminds us in Romans 7:14-25 that it’s on ongoing battle, and the enemy is relentless.  Paul was the “super-saint” – if he could not win the war of sin on his own power, what hope do we have to conquer it on our own?

We can all relate to Paul’s daily struggle with sin:

I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.” (Romans 7:15 NIV)

And sin always comes out:

  • in the wrong ways
  • in the most inopportune times
  • for the most petty of reasons
  • toward those whom I love and care for the most

Ouch!  not good!

Paul, in this same passage, reminds us that through Christ and Him alone, victory is possible:
What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!” (Romans 7:24-25a NIV)

The question each of us must ask ourselves:  Am I trying to win this war on my own power, or am I relying on Jesus?
