What are the benefits of acquiring knowledge?
– To be able to engage in small talk at social gatherings?
– To win at trivia contests and games, maybe even compete for cash and prizes?
– To fulfill our “inner geek” desire, and be a walking encyclopedia of information?
– To avoid looking like a fool, and “blend in” to your surroundings?

While these may be nice and even interesting reasons to gather and retain knowledge, the bottom line is much more serious.  We live in a fallen world, a war zone, and our enemy is relentless to overtake our minds and hearts.  So we fight, not only to survive, but to thrive and have victory over our enemy by living lives of eternal value and meaning.

Solomon explains well the advantages and benefits of acquiring knowledge:
The wise prevail through great power,
    and those who have knowledge muster their strength.
Surely you need guidance to wage war,
    and victory is won through many advisers.  (Proverbs 24:5-6 NIV)

While Solomon uses the analogy of a physical war, the same is true of the mental, emotional, and spiritual war on our hearts and minds.  Our enemy wants nothing more than for us to get discouraged and give up, to lose heart and quit trying.

While we should never underestimate our enemy, much of his tactics are more bullying and discouragement than aggression.  But it’s tough to see that perspective when we’re in the midst of the battle.  Sometimes the wounds even come from those we love and trust.

God’s Word is trustworthy, and a source of great strength and encouragement as we do battle each day for our hearts and minds.  And the Lord uses other “advisers” in the form of trusted Godly friends and family along the way as well.

Have you reaped the benefit of knowledge today, before you enter in the battle?  May God’s Word be a blessing and encouragement to you as you fight the enemy of your soul.  I pray that God would also give you a “battle buddy” that watches your back, as you watch theirs.  Remember, God does not intend for us to do this battle alone.
