Let’s face it – 2020 has been a strange year.
But God was not surprised by all the events that have happened.
Would you join me in a four-week countdown to Thanksgiving?
When we stop for a moment, we realize we have much to be thankful for.
17 How precious to me are your thoughts, O God!(Psalm 139:17-18, English Standard Version)
How vast is the sum of them!
18 If I would count them, they are more than the sand.
I awake, and I am still with you.
As we join King David in thankfulness to God for who He is, we praise God for being all-knowing, ever-present, and eternal. God’s span of understanding, presence, and timelessness go far beyond what we can comprehend or even imagine!
And yet, in God’s enormity, in His infinity, there is intimacy.
God knows you and I by name.
He knows how we were put together, because He formed us in the hidden spaces of our mother’s wombs.
And He thinks about us all the time.
In fact, David says that God’s thoughts of each one of us, if counted, would be more than the grains of sand on every seashore.
Wow… that’s a lot of thoughts.
Imagine going to sleep knowing that God is thinking of you and present with you.
And when you wake up, God is still there, smiling, fully present with you, and ready to begin the day with you.
Every. single. day.
So what is David’s response?
Complete surrender and transparency before God.
Let’s listen to David as he provides His concluding thoughts:
“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test my thoughts. Point out anything you find in me that makes you sad, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.”(Psalm 139:23-24, The Living Bible)
And God invites us to do the same.
Here is another rendition of today’s text that captures David’s thoughts:
Every single moment you are thinking of me!(Psalm 139:17-18, The Passion Translation)
How precious and wonderful to consider
that you cherish me constantly in your every thought!
O God, your desires toward me are more
than the grains of sand on every shore!
When I awake each morning, you’re still with me.
Lord, thank You for thinking about me all the time. It’s both utterly terrifying and divinely calming to consider Your loving thoughts towards me and Your constant presence with me.
Lord, there are no secrets of our lives – You know everything about us – every part of our physical selves, our thoughts, our emotions, our longings.
So Lord, here I am – the good, the bad, the ugly… all of me.
Show me the parts of me that need Your loving transformation, and make me more like You, Jesus. Heal my heat and my connection with You, God.
And thank You for leading me in Your way – it’s the best way, even when it may not feel like it at the time.
Learning to enjoy and long for His constant presence,
