“That’s not fair!”
“That’s not right!”

We have all felt the sting of unjust judgments against us or against someone for whom we care about, haven’t we? And whether as children or adults, we have uttered the above words in despair.

The people of ancient Israel were no different in their day, and longed for God to judge those who wronged them and treated them unfairly, both as a nation, and as individuals.

Another promise that God gave the ancient prophets was that Messiah would judge the earth and its inhabitants faithfully and righteously. No bribery, no partiality, no incompetence, no flawed judgment.

Here is the description of Messiah’s righteous rule and reign:

11 There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse,
    and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.
² And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him,
    the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
    the Spirit of counsel and might,
    the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
³ And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.
He shall not judge by what his eyes see,
    or decide disputes by what his ears hear,
⁴ but with righteousness he shall judge the poor,
    and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;
and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,
    and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.
⁵ Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist,
    and faithfulness the belt of his loins.

(Isaiah 11:1-5, English Standard Version)

Through the prophet Isaiah, God foretold of a righteous judge of all the earth, One who would rule with power and compassion and justice, conquering evil while not overlooking the overlooked and forgotten.

And this righteous ruler is none other than Jesus, the Messiah.

Like the ancients who looked forward to the first Advent, Messiah’s first coming, we look forward to Jesus’ second coming, where He promises to set up His righteous rule and reign and make all things right.

And we have that same hope, that evil will be defeated, that every wrong will be righted, every injustice will be corrected, with wisdom and love – in Jesus, the righteous ruler of all.
